A brass band parade is a very common sight in New Orleans - for any occasion, large or small. Quite often parading through the narrow side streets, many parade-goers follow the main band down the street, just enjoying the music and dancing in the street behind the band, twirling decorated parasols and waiving handkerchiefs in the air. They are call the “second line” - or “second lining” - just like a jazz funeral, but without a body! The Olympia is one of the oldest in New Orleans and had the great distinction of being the only brass band to greet the Pope when he came to New Orleans in 1987!
